Onyinye Mbanefo:Are Youths Still Tomorrow's Leaders?

The popular saying that Youths are leaders of tomorrow is a truism which has remained unrealistic in Nigeria. Whether this fact can ever see the light of the day at all is left for time to tell because the essence of the
saying tends to diminish as Youths attain the age of discernment.

As pupils,we still recall some prominent names often mentioned as leaders who laboured tirelessly for our nation's independence. We are being encouraged then to strive like them with assurance that we shall assume their place in advancing the fortune of our country because "we are leaders of  tomorrow."

In our innocence we had no reason to doubt because to us then,it was obvious that with time we shall assume such responsibilities. The assurance never stopped even as we proceed to the next level and of course through our university days. In all these stages our optimism never dimmed and we kept hope alive.
Funny enough, these men of yesteryears are not even ready to let go and give the Youths a chance. One has continued to wonder why grandfathers should hold on to power so tenaciously to detriment of the young.

From the look of things, one is tempted to pose this question; 'Are the Nigerian Youths ill- prepared and thus cannot lead?'The cause here is not an inch close to the Youth's inability. What is needed is the enabling environment to excel in politics and other areas. That is if our old greedy power seekers will allow that.
Finally, our country can achieve tremendous greatness in the hands of her Youth.Believe it or not.
